NATURE, EXPRESSIVE ARTS, AND ALWAYS THE BODY April 29, 2024
In this time of unprecedented ecological and social crises in the world, what is the role of expressive arts professionals in meeting the challenges of our time? How do we experience our interconnectedness within the cycles of the natural world as resource for personal wellbeing, professional work in expressive arts, and a way of being in the world? In this course we will explore theoretical foundations and practical tools for practicing somatic nature-based expressive arts work.
Goals of the Course
To explore nature-based expressive arts within the cultural and natural contexts of our time.
To examine the fundamental importance of nature as the basis of expressive arts work and somatic sustainability.
To experience and practice tools for implementing somatic nature-based expressive arts in personal, community, and ecological well-being.

Professor Sally Atkins, Ed.D., REAT, REACE, Licensed Psychologist is a teacher, poet, psychotherapist, researcher, and ritualist. She was the founding director of the graduate expressive arts program at Appalachian State University and core faculty of the European Graduate School in Switzerland for 20 years. She has taught internationally in Scandinavia, Europe, China, Canada and Central and South America. Her recent academic publications include book chapters and articles on expressive arts and nature, integrative theory in expressive arts and arts-based research. Her books include Poetry in Expressive Arts Therapy, co-authored with Margo Fuchs Knill, Nature-based Expressive Arts Therapy, co-authored with Melia Snyder, and Presence and Process in Expressive Arts Work, co-authored with Herbert Eberhart, in addition to three books of poetry.

Laurie Atkins, M.A., M.F.A. is an Associate Professor and Vice Chairperson in the Department Theatre and Dance at Appalachian State University. With a background in expressive arts therapy, dance performance, Classical Pilates, Yoga Nidra and GYROKINESIS®, her work focuses on a detailed understanding of the capacities of the human body through the intersections of somatic study, somatic sustainability, dance performance, and expressive arts.
